05/17/2013Bio Ag: Arizona Lunar Greenhouse
The Prototype Lunar Greenhouse (LGH) is equipped as a Bioregenerative Life Support System (BLSS) through the design and construction of an innovative hydroponic plant growth chamber. Centered on using plants to sustain a continuous vegetarian diet for astronauts, a typical BLSS employs plants and crop production in addition for food, to also provide air revitalization, water recycling, and waste recycling for the crew. Fulfilling the requirement of NASA's GES and the late Mr. Steckler's dream of space colonization, the LGH aims to deliver more than supporting a sustained human presence in space. The LGH aspires to bring practical commerical-ready technology to Earth's CEA forefront.

05/17/2013Announcing Grants for Emerging Medical Device Companies
Arizona has one of the fastest growing bioscience communities in the US; annual total economic activity is now $28.8 billion. It has a particularly robust medical device sector, which constitutes 32% of Arizona’s non-hospital bioscience employment. With first-class research institutions and an industry spanning from one-person shops to industry giants, Arizona has it all.To support this critically important sector, the City of Peoria, Arizona, BioAccel and The Plaza Companies have created BioInspire™, an incubator in Peoria dedicated to medical device development that provides working capital and space to qualifying companies. More than just a facility, this collaboration was created to connect the medical device community.

05/17/2013Pediatric Neuroscience
Dr. Adelson has been recognized as one of the foremost experts on pediatric head injury , lecturing around the United States and the world. Now he joined Phoenix Children's to expand a program that surpasses the typical model of pediatric care. For some, it's playing a musical instrument. For others, it's painting. But for P. David Adelson, MD, FACS, FAAP, the director of the Hospital's Barrow Neurological Institute and chief of neurosurgery, his passion is a bit atypical. "My hobby is neuroscience," he says. "The heart's a pump, the kidney's a filter – those are all simple functions which are there to support who we are and what we do." But the brain controls it all, he says. "I just looked at the brain and neurosciences as the next frontier; studying something of which I would never get bored." Dr. Adelson has been recognized as one of the foremost experts on pediatric head injury clinical management, lecturing around the United States and the world. He has been published in numerous medical and scientific journals defining "state-of-the art" in the care of children with traumatic brain injuries. The path to Phoenix Children's Hospital Dr. Adelson came to Phoenix in January from Pittsburgh, where he served as the A. Leland Albright Endowed Professor of Neurosurgery/Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Vice Chairman, (Research) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine , one of the most prominent neurosurgical departments in the country.
